Get approved to become an MP

Becoming an MP >> Get approved

Gaining approval is the first step on the journey to parliament

The Conservative Party follows a four-stage assessment process which looks at your political conviction, life experience, integrity and judgement. College Green Group has helped people pass this assessment through each of the last five election cycles. Since 2020, we have helped over 120 people to join the Approved List.

Your application starts with an invitation to answer four questions on these themes and we can help you craft your answers to those questions. Over 15,000 characters, we can help you tell a compelling story about you, to get you past this first hurdle.

If you are invited to the next stage, you have to provide three referees, and details of your online and social media presence. We can guide you on who to ask to vouch for you and carry out a pre-emptive check of your online presence.

The formal ‘Assessment Centre’ is then split into two further stages. The first will see you interviewed by two assessors, over Teams. You get to set out your stall then face about an hour of competency questions. There is also an online ‘Inbox’ exercise at this stage, where you need to prioritise and respond to eight scenarios an MP might typically find waiting for them every morning. We have gained a thorough understanding of the questions and challenges you will face and the competencies the Party is looking for.

The second stage of the Assessment Centre is in-person. You face a public speaking challenge in the form of a Hustings speech with Q&A. You also have to pass a collaboration exercise where four prospective candidates are expected to agree on a common position on a local issue. You also do a further online judgement test and take a series of psychometric tests.
